So What's Up With All Those Spirals
It seems that every second stage hypnotist website I see has a cheesy spiral graphic somewhere on it.  I know that when you spin a spiral there is an optical illusion like many “op art” illusions, and such illusions have been used to assist hypnotic inductions, but why so many spirals and so few watches for instance.  Do they not own a watch?

Perhaps the spiral signifies membership of a secret society like the freemasons.  Clearly I am not a member, because I don’t have a spiral, and I have not been initiated into the secret rituals where members identify themselves with spiral glasses and exchange the secret handbag when they meet. The number of spirals cannot be explained by a couple of bad 1950’s movies and lack of imagination, or is it really that simple?

Most of the spirals are poor quality graphics, and the animated ones are plainly annoying.

All this is by way of saying that there seems to me to be two categories of stage hypnotist, those that rely heavily on “past practice”, old gags, and old show formats, and those that have taken a leap into the 21st century and have updated their image, their shows, and their material.

When you look around there are a handful of really classy sites and hypnotists; some leave me in awe, and I am inspired to go further by their ideas and presentation.  The rest, well, ho hum.  What does the secret spiral handbag look like I wonder?
