Free stop smoking audio MP3 (Yeah, right)

I came across some of these the other day.  I signed up because there was no cost.  And lo! They started sending me one per day these very nice, short, professional audio segments of what was shaping up (for the first few episodes) as a good, professional attempt at persuading someone to give up smoking.  Likely not effective for everyone, but much like the Tony Robbins Personal Power audio courses, persuasive and likely to work for some people and it was free.  I listened avidly to my daily dose, and each made me more keen to give up smoking.  Well, I’d have had to start smoking first, but you get the gist.

Then came episode 4.

By now, if I actually was a smoker, and had been going along with their intro, I’d be keen to change, I had invested three days, and they were telling me that it was my unconscious mind that was driving my habit, and that for many people, a conscious decision backed up by heaps of will power just wasn’t enough. That is true.  I needed to make an unconscious change.  Also true.  And I could make that change if I went to their website and purchased their CD.

“To grasp control of your sub-conscious and make giving up smoking a pleasurable experience through Positive Hypnosis – visit our homepage and order our satisfaction guaranteed Self-Hypnosis CD.”

I guess the good thing is that they claim that there’s a guarantee.  The outrageous con is that they offer a free service, but in reality the service is only partial, to get the whole thing you have to pay.

Notice the presuppositions in their plug, too.  If I don’t buy their CD, then I will not “grasp control of my unconscious” which they already told me was what I needed to do to quit, and worse, I would not make “giving up smoking a pleasurable experience”, in other words I’d fail and it would be unpleasant too.

In fact it is easy to look at the first few days “audio” as little more than elaborate bait, and once they have you hooked, they throw in the bit that says their course won’t really work unless you give them money for the part they left out.  In many ways, this is the worst kind of manipulation.  Most smokers have a tough job giving up, without being preyed upon by the unscrupulous.
